Moving to the UK Hub

We understand that moving to the UK to study can be an exciting opportunity however moving to a diferrent country can come with a new set of challenges.

This hub helps to answer some common Q&A’s that previous students have asked when moving to the UK.

Phone Plans

There are two main options when it comes to moving abroad with phone plans.
You can see whether your existing provider offers an international plan however this can be a more expensive option.
It does however allow you to keep your US number, however this does mean that texts and phone calls to UK numbers can accrue an extra charge, this can be avoided by using WhatsApp.
This option is most recommended for students that are not staying a long time in London.

The alternative is to pay for a UK provider e-sim – Please note: You will require a phone that is able to host an e-sim.
This also provide a UK phone number which allows you to access reward programmes such as Clubcard, Nectar Card ect…

Some popular providers (linked below) provide monthly plans:

GiffGaff

The UK uses Type G plugs, which are different from US outlets.

Voltage

  • US: 120V

You’ll likely need:

  • a US → UK adapter

Phones and laptops usually work fine, but check the label on chargers before plugging in. Hair dryers/straighteners are the most common issue.

Transport for London (TfL)
